The strong increase is attributed among other things to the higher pollen load. For more than a decade, flowers have been releasing higher and higher amounts of pollen allergens ever earlier and longer. The cause for this is environmental factors, such as the exhaust gases of cars, made responsible. The main allergy-causing pollen come from birch, alder, hazelnut, rye and the herbs mugwort and plantain. They enter the mucous membranes of the eyes and the upper respiratory tract as the finest dust and cause the eyes, sneezing, runny nose, coughing or shortness of breath to become symptomatic in a very short time. The allergic person feels weak and occasionally a slight fever is added.
Hay fever must be treated
The pollen allergy is usually referred to as hay fever. Anyone who suffers from cold symptoms in the spring has to answer the question whether it is a cold or an allergic reaction. Not infrequently, the disease is misunderstood as a delayed cold, but it can also be mixed with a respiratory tract infection. Typical of pollen allergy is that it occurs at about the same time each year. Once hay fever has occurred, it will worsen over the first two to three years and then return year after year with about the same intensity – if you do nothing. In middle adult life, the disease usually improves and can then slowly fade away. This is due to an age-related change in the immune system. But hay fever is a serious allergy. Because the upper respiratory tract symptoms can shift to the bronchi. Then the pollen asthma is added to the mentioned hay fever symptoms. This can spread to a year-round asthma. Thirty percent of respiratory allergy sufferers who are not treated appropriately develop bronchial asthma after several years.
Pollen allergy sufferers also respond to food
